Quick answer

Howl-o-ween has arrived! This season is the perfect opportunity to have some fun with your dog, dressing up and costumes can be fun for all. Choosing a comfortable costume that still lets them move, see and breathe freely will keep them happy, and be sure to keep chocolate, sweets, raisins and candles entirely out of reach.

We've pulled together some of our favourite dog costumes ideas for the Halloween season, alongside some extra safety tips and hazards to keep your eye out for this spooky season.

Fang-tastic Fun for You and Your Dog

The leaves are turning orange, the pumpkins are getting carved and your doorbell is about to be ringing loud with trick or treaters!

Dog Halloween Costume Ideas for 2026

From spooky to downright silly

  • Classic Spooky

    Count Dog-ula

Nothing says Halloween quite like a vampire! Using a lightweight cape that fastens with velcro is a great way for dogs of all sizes to dress up for the spooky season without feeling overwhelmed. This will work especially well for short-haired dogs who are unlikely to overheat under the fabric.

  • Pun-tastic

    Hot Dog

Now, Dachshunds were truly made for this one, but no matter the breed this can be a great crowd pleaser at any Halloween celebration. The costume can be nice and soft and who doesn't love this tasty snack!

  • Easy DIY

    Skeleton

Using a dark coloured old dog jumper, and pet-safe paint, decorate the jumper with some lovely white bones for an easy way to create your own costume for your furry friend. This is great for dogs who already wear clothing happily, meaning there is nothing new to get used to, and remember to let the paint dry fully before wearing.

Dog Costume Safety Tips

Keeping it fun for them, too

  • Check the fit - Your dog must be able to walk normally, breathe, see, hear and go to the toilet freely making sure there is nothing tight around the neck, face or legs.
  • Skip small accessories - Avoiding buttons, sequins or loose elastic that could be chewed off and swallowed will reduce risks and discomfort.
  • Trial run - It's best to try the costume ahead of time, and for short periods with plenty of praise and treats to help them adjust to the new costume ahead of October 31st.
  • Don't leave them unattended - Keep your dog supervised while they are dressed up, and once the celebration comes to an end take the costume off as soon as possible.

Not every dog loves dressing up: If your dog shows any signs of discomfort or distress by freezing, cowering or scratching take the costume off straight away. For a low-stress alternative something light like a bandana can be a great alternative!

Halloween Hazards for Dogs

What to keep out of paws' reach

  • Chocolate

Chocolate is very toxic to dogs as it contains theobromine, ensure it is kept entirely out of reach. Dark chocolate is most dangerous as it contains larger amounts of theobromine.

  • Sweets and Sugar-Free Treats

Chewing gum and some sugar-free sweets contain Xylitol, a life threatening sweetener for dogs, even in small amounts.

  • Raisins and Grapes

Watch out for fruit-filled treats: grapes, raisins and sultanas may cause kidney failure in dogs. Keep this in mind throughout Autumn and Winter as they are prominent ingredients across Christmas seasonal treats too.

  • Candles and Decorations

Candlelit pumpkins, glow sticks and fake cobwebs must be kept out of reach from dogs, it is wise to swap real tealights for battery-powered ones to avoid unwanted burnt noses!

If your dog eats something they shouldn't: Contact your vet straight away, describe to them what was eaten, the amount and when this took place. if you can, keep any packaging or wrappers to show the vet.
