Is BARF (Raw Dog Food) Safe?
Barf, i.e. biologically species-appropriate feeding, has many advantages: The food is fresh and natural, has a high level of acceptance and is healthy due to its high density of vital substances and digestibility. Unfortunately, BARF has a decisive disadvantage: the meat, offal and bones are very often contaminated with facultative pathogenic germs, i.e. pathogenic bacteria such as enterobacteria, salmonella, clostridia, campylobacter, listeria and yersinia. The resulting dysbiosis in particular favours a shift in the intestinal flora, which then manifests itself in diarrhoea, flatulence, itching and skin problems, for example. In the long term, these often multi-resistant germs can lead to serious intestinal and stomach diseases.
Another disadvantage of BARF feeding is the meat-heavy and low-carbohydrate rations. They sometimes contain more than double the protein requirement. This often leads to an increased burden on the liver and kidneys, which manifests itself in increased urea levels in the blood and urine. If the ration contains mainly products rich in connective tissue, dysbiosis can occur in the intestines, which manifests itself in soft faeces consistency or diarrhoea. Barfing is ultimately not really suitable for dogs with liver or kidney disease, but also with non-allergic intestinal diseases due to the high protein and connective tissue content. If dogs live with pregnant women, children or immunocompromised people, raw feeding is generally not recommended.
You don't have refrigeration facilities, but would still like to feed our fresh menus? Our selection of fresh menus in a jar
The special thing about our fresh menus in a jar is that we first gently steam-cook the meat outside the jar. Only then do we add the other healthy ingredients such as fresh vegetables and fruit as well as high-quality oils and sterilise the mixture in the jar with significantly shorter dwell times. This preserves the nutrients much better than tinned food, for example, which is always cooked completely in the tin. The meat also remains in pieces and is not overcooked into a "mush".
